POLICE IG ORDERS THE PROVISION OF ADEQUATE SECURITY FOR PORT HARCOURT POLICE GAMES.

The Inspector –General of Police, IGP MD Abubakar, CFR, NPM, mni, today 27th February, 2013, directed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Zone 6 and the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, to ensure the provision of adequate security for all athletes, Officials and invited guests of 10th Biennial Police Games coming up in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, from 3rd to 9th March, 2013.
 
The IGP gave this directive in Force Headquarters while speaking on the stake the Games holds for the Force and the entire Nigerian sporting community. He further directed particular attention must be given to Hotels accommodating guests, all athletes’ camping and training grounds; and event centres.  
 
Meanwhile, several units of the Police Mobile Force (PMF) drawn from neighbouring State Police Commands have been deployed to strategic points in and around Port Harcourt . Also deployed are units of the Counter Terrorism Unit who are to cover all sporting venues. These respective units are joined by Intelligence Operatives from Force Headquarters, Zones 5 and 6; and neighbouring State Police Command. These arrangements are in addition to strategic plans already put in place by the Rivers State Police Command.
 
The IGP has specifically directed the AIG Air-wing to deploy Police Helicopters for aerial patrols, to assist ground troops in effectively securing the nooks-and-crannies of the Garden City and its environs. Equally, the Force Marine Official has been directed to ensure the effected patrol of all water fronts around Port Harcourt , by Marine Police Patrol Boats, to further beef-up the security of the city for the Games.  
 
It is the assurance of the IGP that the Games will be conducted under very peaceful and secure sporting atmosphere. He enjoins all sports loving and well meaning Nigerians to assist the Police in providing useful information in the collective efforts at checking the activities of miscreants who may want capitalize on the friendly mode of the Games to commit crime during the period of the Games.
 
The IGP advises all Police personnel deployed and engaged in the duty of ensuring safe and secure Games, to be friendly with members of the public before, during and after the Games. He once again, most warmly invites all sports loving Nigerians in and around Port Harcourt , to go to the nearest Police Games venue to watch events of their choice; as their presence will spur competing athletes to put in their best.
